Why did you become an attorney?

As a teacher in Detroit for two years, it seemed that I wasn't able to make any significant impact on the families I was dealing with.  It was frustrating to have the children only a few hours out of the day and then return them to their homes where they confronted daily problems. The law afforded me an opportunity to work in a variety of areas within the blue collar community I was raised in to hopefully deal with these greater issues.

What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?

My interaction with my clients has allowed me to examine life in general from many different perspectives.  I have seen and experienced great satisfaction when my clients prevail in a case while also sharing in thier frustration and disappointment when they are not successful.  I have sufferd the personal loss of family members and know what it feels like to deal with people as they go through a personal loss.  The process of being involved in a lawsuit is stressful and brings on the same emotions as a personal loss.  I have worked with good and compassionate judges and attorneys while also dealing with those that are not so nice.  My experience has afforded me the insight to know the difference.

What made you choose your primary specialty focus of law?

My initial area of practice was working in the law firm of a newly elected Wayne County Probate Judge.  His practice had been around for more than fifty (50) years and I was allowed to gain experience in many areas of the law.  His hands-on approach continues to be the model I work from.  My focus in on the client and then the legal issue to be resolved.  Just as in law school I try to identify the issue/s, apply the rule of law, and reach the correct answer.

Describe your ideal client.

There is no such person or entity.  If a client comes to me there is an underlying situation that must be addressed, all that I ask is that they be honest with the information they provide to me.

Describe your personal interest and hobbies.

My primary interests include anything I can do with my wife and grandchilren.  After that I enjoy golf, fishing, and reading (in no particular order).

Accomplishments

From 1990 to 1992 I relocated to Las Vegas, NV and became house counsel for United Title of Nevada.  I was their first in-house attorney to serve in the capacity as Claims Manager.

I also ran for Macomb County Probate Judge in 2012 and was defeated by Carl J. Marlinga.  This was my one and only experience in the political arena.  Even though I didn't win I gained invaluable insight into the process of running a campaign.

Significant Cases

My largest settlement was a dramshop case resulting from a motorcycle accident  while my most interesting cases have involved probate and trust litigation.  Estate Planning can be very rewarding when done correctly but when someone dies and the estate is not handled according to the plan families are torn apart.  I have also witnessed significant family problems when a loved one is involved with criminal activity.  Whether its a personal injury, an estate issue, a divorce, or criminal activity I view all cases I handle as significant to the client.

Summary of Firm

As the only attorney in my firm I provide personal interaction with all of my clients and strive to handle all of their concerns in a professional and thorough manner.  If I cannot handle your case I have developed a network of attorneys and lawyers who I am confident in that can help.  I continue to work with  some of my oldest clients since I became an attorney.  My philosphy is simple, "Identify the problem and work towards a solution on the best terms possible fo rmy clients."
